Basic Usage
NameMemory is a memory support app designed to help you remember people's names. It uses scientifically-based spaced repetition learning (SM-2 algorithm) to support efficient memory retention.
- Memory support linking photos with names
- Scientific review schedule (SM-2 algorithm)
- Privacy-first (local storage only)
- Usable in various scenes (daily life and business)
To add a person, follow these steps:
- Tap the "New Registration" button on the home screen
- Enter the person's name
- Take a photo or select from gallery
- Add memo or tags if needed
- Tap the "Save" button
There are two ways to add photos:
- Take with camera: Tap "Camera" button to take directly
- Select from gallery: Tap "Gallery" button to choose existing photos
Photos are automatically compressed and optimized to save storage space.
Tags are used to categorize and organize people:
- Add tags: Enter tags in the person edit screen
- Filter by tags: Tap tag chips on the home screen
- Recommended tags: "Business", "Friends", "Family", "Colleagues", etc.
Using tags allows you to display only people in specific categories.
NameMemory has multiple search and filtering features:
- Search box: Search by name or memo content
- Quick filters: Filter by "All", "Need Review", "Business"
- Tag filters: Display only people with specific tags
Combining these features allows you to quickly find the person you're looking for.
To edit or delete person information:
- Tap the person from the person list
- Tap "Edit" button on the detail screen
- Modify information and tap "Save"
To delete:
- Tap "Delete" button on the edit screen
- Select "Delete" in the confirmation dialog
About face detection and privacy:
- On-device processing: Face detection runs locally using Google ML Kit; photos and face data are not sent to servers
- Model download: On first use, ML models may be downloaded to your device from Google; your photos are not uploaded
- Permissions: Camera and storage are used only for capture and reading images; you can use avatars or register without photos
Follow these steps to restore purchases:
- Open Settings > Purchase
- Tap Restore purchases
- Confirm you’re signed in with the same Google/Apple account used for purchase
- Restart the app after restore completes
- Cross‑platform restore (Android ↔ iOS) is not supported
- Refunds are handled by Google Play/App Store policies
If paid features are locked after updating:
- Run Restore purchases from Settings
- Ensure the same store account is signed in
- Restart the app
- Update Google Play/App Store app if restore fails
- Contact support if the issue persists
Avatar Feature
When you don't have photos or prioritize privacy, you can use the avatar feature:
- Select "Create Avatar" on the person add screen
- Choose hairstyle, clothing, accessories, etc.
- Tap "Generate" button
- Save your preferred avatar
Privacy considerations when using avatar feature:
- External service: Accesses Avataaars.io (US)
- Data sent: IP address, avatar parameters
- Alternative: Manual photo upload available
You can register people without photos:
- Select "Skip Photo" on the person add screen
- Create avatar or add photo later
- Complete registration with name and memo only
You can add photos or avatars later.
Review & Memory System
The SM-2 algorithm is a scientifically-based spaced repetition learning system developed by Dr. Piotr Wozniak in 1987:
- E-Factor (Easiness Factor): Dynamically adjusts based on individual memory retention
- First review: After 1 day
- Second review: After 6 days
- Third review onwards: Previous interval × E-Factor
- Quality assessment: Evaluate accuracy and speed of response on 0-5 scale
This algorithm scientifically supports efficient memory retention.
How the review system operates:
- Automatic scheduling: App calculates optimal review timing
- Notifications: Push notification when review time arrives
- Quiz format: Choose correct answer from options
- Evaluation: Automatically evaluates review results
- Adjustment: Adjust next review date based on evaluation
Continuing reviews improves memory retention rates.
You can adjust review schedule in these ways:
- Notification time: Change daily notification time in settings
- Automatic evaluation: Intervals automatically adjust based on review accuracy rate
- Manual review: Start review anytime
Business mode is a feature that can be used when you want to record more detailed information:
- Company/Organization name: Record affiliated organization
- Relationship: Relationships like friends, colleagues, boss, clients
- Meeting place: Places like meetings, exhibitions, networking events, schools, clubs
- Keywords: Features or topics you want to remember
Enabling business mode displays more detailed information during reviews, enabling memory support in various scenes.
Data Management & Backup
To create data backup, follow these steps:
- Open settings screen
- Select "Data Management" section
- Tap "Backup"
- Set password with 8+ characters
- Tap "Save"
- Person data (name, photo, memo, tags)
- Review schedule (includes next review date and SM-2 related fields for each person. Individual review logs are not included)
- App settings (includes some major settings items)
- Image files (included in ZIP for full backup)
Backup files are saved to device's download folder.
To restore data from backup, follow these steps:
- Open "Data Management" in settings
- Tap "Restore"
- Select backup file (.zip: full backup including images)
- Enter password
- Tap "Restore"
Backup files are protected with strong encryption:
- Encryption method: AES encryption
- Password requirement: 8+ characters mandatory
- Security: Cannot restore if password is forgotten
- Recommendation: Use strong but memorable password
- Use password manager app
- Record password in multiple places
- Change password regularly
About backup formats:
- ZIP (Full backup): Complete backup including data and images (recommended)
Data migration procedure for device change:
- Old device: Create ZIP format backup in settings
- Transfer backup: Transfer via cloud storage or USB cable
- New device: Install NameMemory app
- Restore: Restore data from backup file
- Google Drive / iCloud
- USB cable (Android)
- AirDrop (iOS)
To completely delete data:
- Open "Data Management" in settings
- Tap "Reset"
- Select "Reset" in confirmation dialog
- Uninstall app
Uninstalling the app will delete all data on the device.
Privacy & Security
NameMemory is designed with privacy-first approach:
- Local storage: All data stored only on device
- No cloud transmission: Person data and photos not sent to external servers
- Encryption: Backup files protected with AES encryption
- User control: Complete ownership of data
