📱 Data Migration Guide for Device Change

Preparation Before Migration

Migratable Data

The following data can be migrated in NameMemory:

  • Person Data (Name, Memo, Tags, Company/Organization Name)
  • Photos & Image Files
  • Review Schedule (Includes next review date and SM-2 related fields for each person. Individual review logs are not included.)
  • App Settings (Key settings like notification preferences, theme settings, etc.)

Required Items

  • Old device and new device
  • USB cable (for Android to Android)
  • Cloud storage account (Google Drive, iCloud, OneDrive, etc.)
  • Sufficient free space (for the backup file)
  • An 8+ character password (for backup encryption)

Migration Precautions

  • Always create a backup before migrating
  • Record your password in a safe place so you don't forget it
  • Do not use the app during migration
  • After migration is complete, check that your data displays correctly

Android → Android Migration

1 Create a backup on the old device
Time required: Approx. 2-3 min
  1. Open the NameMemory app
  2. Tap the Settings screen (⚙️)
  3. Select the "Data Management" section
  4. Tap "Backup"
  5. Enter an 8+ character password
  6. Tap "Save"

Note

The backup is created in ZIP format and includes photos.

2 Transfer the backup file
Time required: Approx. 1-2 min

Method A: USB Cable (Recommended)

  1. Connect both devices with a USB cable
  2. Select "File Transfer" mode on the old device
  3. Copy the backup file to the "Download" folder on the new device

Method B: Cloud Storage

  1. Upload from the old device to Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.
  2. Log in to the same account on the new device
  3. Download the backup file
3 Install the app on the new device
Time required: Approx. 1-2 min
  1. Open the Google Play Store
  2. Search for "NameMemory"
  3. Tap "Install"
  4. Wait for the installation to complete
4 Restore from backup
Time required: Approx. 2-3 min
  1. Open the NameMemory app
  2. Tap the Settings screen (⚙️)
  3. Select the "Data Management" section
  4. Tap "Restore"
  5. Select the backup file (.zip)
  6. Enter the password
  7. Tap "Restore"
5 Confirm data
Time required: Approx. 1-2 min
  1. Check if the person list displays correctly
  2. Check if photos are displayed
  3. Check if the review schedule is correct
  4. Check if settings have been migrated

iOS → iOS Migration

1 Create a backup on the old device
Time required: Approx. 2-3 min
  1. Open the NameMemory app
  2. Tap the Settings screen (⚙️)
  3. Select the "Data Management" section
  4. Tap "Backup"
  5. Enter an 8+ character password
  6. Tap "Save"
2 Transfer the backup file
Time required: Approx. 1-2 min

Method A: AirDrop (Recommended)

  1. Enable AirDrop on both devices
  2. Select the backup file on the old device
  3. Send to the new device

Method B: iCloud Drive

  1. Upload to iCloud Drive from the old device
  2. Log in to the same Apple ID on the new device
  3. Download from iCloud Drive
3 Install the app on the new device
Time required: Approx. 1-2 min
  1. Open the App Store
  2. Search for "NameMemory"
  3. Tap "Get"
  4. Wait for the installation to complete
4 Restore from backup
Time required: Approx. 2-3 min
  1. Open the NameMemory app
  2. Tap the Settings screen (⚙️)
  3. Select the "Data Management" section
  4. Tap "Restore"
  5. Select the backup file
  6. Enter the password
  7. Tap "Restore"
5 Confirm data
Time required: Approx. 1-2 min
  1. Check if the person list displays correctly
  2. Check if photos are displayed
  3. Check if the review schedule is correct
  4. Check if settings have been migrated

Android ↔ iOS Cross-Platform Migration

Limitations of Cross-Platform Migration

  • Notification settings will not be migrated (requires reconfiguration on each platform)
  • Some app settings may not be migrated
  • Photo display may take time due to different image paths
1 Create Backup
Time required: Approx. 2-3 min
  1. Open the NameMemory app on the old device
  2. Tap the Settings screen (⚙️)
  3. Select the "Data Management" section
  4. Tap "Backup" (The generated ZIP will include photos)
  5. Enter an 8+ character password
  6. Tap "Save"

Note

The backup is created in ZIP format (including images). Please use this ZIP for cross-platform migration as well.

2 Transfer via Cloud Storage
Time required: Approx. 2-5 min

Recommended Services:

  • Google Drive (Android & iOS compatible)
  • OneDrive (Microsoft account)
  • Dropbox
  • iCloud Drive (Available on iOS)
  1. Open the cloud storage app on the old device
  2. Upload the backup file
  3. Log in to the same account on the new device
  4. Download the backup file
3 Install the app on the new device
Time required: Approx. 1-2 min

For Android:

  1. Search for and install "NameMemory" from the Google Play Store

For iOS:

  1. Search for and install "NameMemory" from the App Store
4 Restore from backup
Time required: Approx. 3-5 min
  1. Open the NameMemory app
  2. Tap the Settings screen (⚙️)
  3. Select the "Data Management" section
  4. Tap "Restore"
  5. Select the ZIP format backup file
  6. Enter the password
  7. Tap "Restore"
  8. Wait for the restore to complete (may take longer if there are many photos)
5 Confirm data
Time required: Approx. 1-2 min
  1. Check if the person list displays correctly
  2. Check if photos are displayed (may take time on first load)
  3. Check if the review schedule is correct
  4. Check if company/organization names display correctly
6 Reconfigure Settings
Time required: Approx. 1-2 min
  1. Reconfigure notification settings
  2. Check and adjust theme settings
  3. Check and adjust language settings
  4. Check other app settings

Complete

Cross-platform migration is now complete. Your data has been fully migrated, and you can now use NameMemory on your new device.

How to Check the Change Log

  1. Search for NameMemory in the app store
  2. Check "Version History" or "What's New"

Automatic Update Settings

Android (Google Play):

  1. Open the Google Play Store
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top right
  3. Go to "Settings" → "Auto-update apps"
  4. Select "Over Wi-Fi only" or "Over any network"

iOS (App Store):

  1. Open the "Settings" app
  2. Select "App Store"
  3. Turn on "App Updates"

Manual Update Steps

Android:

  1. Open the Google Play Store
  2. Tap "My apps & games"
  3. Tap the "Update" button for NameMemory

iOS:

  1. Open the App Store
  2. Select the "Updates" tab
  3. Tap the "Update" button for NameMemory

Precautions for Version Updates

Data Backup Recommended

We recommend always creating a backup before important updates:

  1. "Backup" in the Settings screen
  2. Set an 8+ character password
  3. Save the backup file in a safe place

Compatibility Information

  • Backward compatibility planned
  • Database format: Automatic migration planned
  • Settings file: Automatic migration planned

Important: In‑App Purchase Verification Fix (2025‑11‑12)

We improved purchase verification and restore logic. If paid features are locked after updating:

  1. Open Settings > Purchase and tap “Restore purchases”
  2. Ensure you are signed in with the same Google/Apple account used for purchase
  3. Restart the app after restore completes
  4. If it still fails, update to the latest app version and try again
  5. Contact support if the issue persists

Note: Cross‑platform restore (Android ↔ iOS) is not supported by the stores.

Face Detection (Google ML Kit)

  • Detection runs on-device; photos and face data are not sent to servers
  • On first use, an ML model may be downloaded to your device from Google (no photo data is sent)
  • Ensure camera permission is granted to use camera features

If face detection does not start, connect to the internet once to allow model download, then retry.

🛠️ Troubleshooting

Backup-Related Issues

Cannot find the backup file

Cause: File was not saved, or the save location is unknown

Solution:

  1. Check the device's "Download" folder
  2. Search for "NameMemory" by file name
  3. Search using a file manager app
  4. Create the backup again
Forgot the password

Cause: Did not record the password during backup

Solution:

  1. Check records in your password manager app
  2. Check records in memo apps or notes
  3. Create a new backup (and record the password)
  4. Backups with forgotten passwords cannot be restored

Restore-Related Issues

Data does not appear after restoring

Cause: Restore process is not complete, or the file is corrupted

Solution:

  1. Restart the app
  2. Wait until the restore process is complete
  3. Try again with a different backup file
  4. Uninstall and reinstall the app
Photos are not displayed

Cause: Image file path has changed, or the file is corrupted

Solution:

  1. Restore again using the ZIP format backup
  2. Re-add photos individually
  3. Use the avatar feature
  4. Restart the app

Data-Related Issues

Company/Organization name is blank

Cause: Backup from an old version, or a data migration issue

Solution:

  1. Create a new backup with the latest version
  2. Edit the person's information and re-enter the company name
  3. Check if Business Mode is enabled
Review schedule was reset

Cause: Failed to migrate review data

Solution:

  1. Start a review session manually
  2. The app will learn the new schedule
  3. Continue reviewing regularly

App-Related Issues

App does not launch

Cause: App is corrupted, or a system issue

Solution:

  1. Restart the device
  2. Uninstall and reinstall the app
  3. Check storage space
  4. Update the OS to the latest version
Other Errors

General Solutions:

  1. Restart the app
  2. Restart the device
  3. Update the app to the latest version
  4. Back up data and reset the app
  5. Contact support
Paid features are locked after the update

Cause: Store receipt re‑verification required after internal fix

Solution:

  1. Open Settings > Purchase > Restore purchases
  2. Confirm the same Google/Apple account is signed in
  3. Restart the app after restore
  4. Update Google Play/App Store app if restore fails
  5. Contact support if it persists
Face detection does not work

Cause: Camera permission not granted, or ML model not downloaded

Solution:

  1. Grant camera permission (OS settings > App > NameMemory > Permissions)
  2. Connect to the internet once and restart the app (for first‑time ML model download)
  3. Update Google Play services (Android) or the app to the latest version
  4. Try again with sufficient lighting and a clear face in frame
